City of Sacramento Department of Utilities

Azteca Cityworks Upgrade Project

DOU LogoGeoIT Resources, Inc. is supporting the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities in a system-wide upgrade of the their existing Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) based upon Cityworks Anywhere 4.5 (desktop based)  to  server-based Cityworks AMS 2013.

SacDouWorkflowsAs part of the upgrade effort, the development team conducted a stakeholder needs assessment and workflow analysis to fully leverage the new environment and significantly streamline maintenance management workflows.

The upgraded Cityworks Server AMS 2013  servers are now in production and being utilized by the Wastewater group.  GeoIT is currently supporting City staff  during Q2 2014 as they take over the user training and rollout the system to the Drainage, Water Distribution, and Water Conservation groups (over 100 additional users).

City of Sacramento PM LayerOne of the many highlights of the project is a GIS-based preventive maintenance (PM) scheduling layer created for the Wastewater group. The City expressed the need for a better way of managing preventive maintenance schedules on individual assets. Utilizing work history and condition data within Cityworks directly-linked to the GIS gives the Wastewater group a dynamic visual of where they need to prioritize their preventive maintenance work. Work order schedulers can logically group assets into preventative maintenance work orders more efficiently based on their maintenance status within their individual target windows and proximity (geography).

Sacramento User Interface ModificationsAnother project highlight are the customized forms and panels that have been deployed. Some basic changes to the XML and CSS files made work forms more legible and utilize highlight colors to which City users were already accustomed. In addition, custom Quality Assurance panels were developed that provide a quick summary of the completion status of a work order or service request. The QA panels are useful to both the work crews in the field as an easy-to-use, color-coded, checklists and to supervisors reviewing the satisfactory completion of a work order (or service request) prior to closing.

GeoIT’s primary subcontractor on this project is Environmental Engineering & Contracting, Inc., providing proven experience at configuring and customizing Cityworks AMS.

Alameda County Public Works Agency

Stormwater Geodatabase Upgrade Project

GeoIT Resources supported Psomas Engineering, Inc. in their project to significantly upgrade the Stormwater Drainage GIS database at the County of Alameda Public Works Agency, including updated data maintenance tools / procedures and improved support for hydrologic/hydraulic modeling capabilities.   Major tasks completed by GeoIT were:

  • Project kickoff / database and application needs assessment
  • Assessment of existing GIS and modeling datasets
  • Creating a new, modernized, geodatabase design for storm water drainage and hydrology, with emphasis on support for hydrologic / hydraulic modeling
  • Developing a migration plan and source/target matrix
  • Executing the data migration from existing data sources into the new geodatabase design
  • Developing and configuring a customized Network Editing toolbar to facilitate stormwater drainage GIS editing and database integrity
  • Developing a data dictionary, including procedures for GIS data maintenance using ArcGIS 10.1 and the customized toolbar
  • Delivery of the finalized geodatabase and tools
  • On-site end-user training to ACPWA GIS storm water database maintenance staff in the new geodatabase, methods, and tools

The project was highly successful and ACPWA is now moving forward with a project to enhance it hydraulic/hydraulic modeling environment leveraging the updated stormwater drainage GIS database.

City of Williams

Planning GIS Upgrade Project

williamsarchlogoGeoIT has completed a project that significantly upgraded the GIS system capabilities at the City of Williams, CA.   Major tasks completed by GeoIT were:

  • Project Initiation and Requirements Meeting
  • Author:  User Requirements Report
  • Author:  GIS Upgrade Plan
  • Update GIS data from third-party sources (e.g. Colusia County, others)
  • Develop a new upgraded  geodatabase schema for administrative boundaries, hydrography, water distribution, sewer collection, general plan land use, zoning, and transportation
  • Migrate existing GIS data into the new upgraded design
  • Upgrade the GIS system architecture to use one centralized geodatabase and new virtualized GIS workstations
  • Update ArcGIS Desktop from 9.2 to 10.1
  • Develop and deliver new owner notification process
  • Upgrade atlas mapping tools and create new atlas maps
  • Upgrade mapping templates and create new wall maps
  • Facilitate transition to using ArcGIS Online for web mapping
  • Develop System Maintenance Guide
  • Provide user orientation seminars and training sessions

City of Seal Beach

GeoIT staff provided support to Psomas, Inc. in their project to develop an upgraded GIS for the City of Seal Beach, CA.   GeoIT developed three customized geodatabase designs and generated ready-to-load, schema-only,  databases for the City’s water distribution, sewer collection, and storm water drainage systems based upon existing City GIS datasets, design requirements from City staff and Psomas,  and industry best practices.

Georgetown Divide Public Utility District

GIS and Facility Mapping

GeoIT led a project and provided the majority of human resources to develop a GIS system for the Georgetown Divide Public Utility District.   Major tasks were:

  • Conducted a Project Kickoff and Geodatabase Design on-site workshop
  • Created geodatabase designs for the irrigation, water distribution, and sewer systems
  • Created a design and implementation plan for GIS and CIS integration
  • Provided GPS data collection user training to District staff
  • Supported the collection and post-processing of over 4,000 meter locations by District staff
  • Converted existing AutoCAD data into the new geodatabase
  • Produced draft atlas map books for client review of converted data
  • Processed red-line markups of draft atlas sheets, along with outstanding map updates
  • Developed procedures for export of GIS data to AutoCAD format
  • Produced new wall maps
  • Installed ESRI software and new geodatabase
  • Tested system installation and integrated with CIS (following plan)
  • Published new GIS data to ArcGIS On-line supporting field-based access
  • Recommended and provided user training

Part of the on-going project scope is to support the system for one year after project acceptance (May 2012), which includes GIS and mapping updates.

City of Oakland Public Works Agency

Work Management System Development

Mr. Hoefer was the project manager and system architect for the development of a 200+ user work management system for the City of Oakland, Public Works Agency utilizing Cityworks software from Azteca Systems as the foundation CMMS software.  The $1.2M, two-year project included:

  • Deployment of Cityworks Desktop and Server in a high-reliability system configuration two sets of parallel (redundant) servers
  • Setup of an equivalent virtualized development, test, and training system using VMware
  • System configuration, including: 500 employees, 68 different work groups, 280 service request templates, 300 work order templates, 340 unique tasks, and 16 department-specific map services (ArcGIS Server)
  • User training for over 200 call takers, work supervisors, and work crew leaders
  • System rollover from an aging call system and paper-based systems (log books) for work activities
  • Deployment of over 100 field-based laptops (Panasonic Toughbook C-19) connected through Sprint Wireless
  • 125-vehicle AVL deployment (Network Fleet) and ArcGIS Server integration
  • Development, testing and deployment of a public service request intake website

The City of Oakland was one of the first major users of Cityworks Server in the country.   The System has been well-received by City users, with new roles and users being added each year,  and has provided significant financial and logistic benefits to the City.

Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development

California Healthcare Atlas

Mr. Hoefer was the manager for several projects supporting the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development that culminated in the development of the California Healthcare Atlas.

The public-facing website provides healthcare facility patient data and statistics to healthcare professionals throughout California, allowing them to better understand their service markets.   The back-end of the website is a robust dynamic data warehouse of summarized patient data constructed in Oracle.

In a later project, also managed by Mr. Hoefer, the site was  expanded to include live earthquake data feeds and hospital status information so that it could be used internally within the OSHPD Emergency Operations Center.

State Water Resources Control Board

Water Rights Information Management System

Mr. Hoefer was the system architect and senior manager for a project to develop a web-based mapping software component to the Water Rights Information Management System replacement project (eWRIMS).  The web-mapping application allows Water Board Division of Water Rights staff to more efficiently manage and query spatial information about water rights.

In a significant follow-on project, Mr. Hoefer managed a team that developed a set of desktop and GPS tools that support the digitization and field-based capture of place-of-use information associated with each water right.
